The Language Resource Center
The Language Resource Center is a unit in the College of Arts and Sciences that supports language teaching and learning. We maintain a student facility with technology-based resources and environments for language learning. The LRC also supports teachers in materials development. The LRC also arranges and sponsors events of intellectual interest to language teachers, with usually six to eight invited speakers each year.
Cornell offers instruction in about 45 languages, with about 30 offering at least two years of regular instruction in a modern language. In addition, the Media Library contains a large collection of language-related audio and video files.
Jumpstart: Introduction to Language and Culture
Jumpstart courses were devised to address the problem of Cornell students traveling to other countries with no background in the language of those countries. These are typically students on short-term (10-day to one-semester) faculty-led programs. The one-credit Jumpstart courses include an introduction to the language, helpful words and phrases for navigating in the country, some program-specific vocabulary and a strong foundation of language and cultural appropriateness. FLAC: Foreign Languages Across the Curriculum
FLAC courses are for intermediate or advanced speakers of a language who want to exercise their language skills in an academic environment, on academic topics. FLAC courses are connected to one or a few parent courses, from which they derive their content focus. Students read and discuss content related to the parent course entirely in the target language of the FLAC course. FLAC courses can work with parent courses of any level. They provide students who have working knowledge of a language the opportunity to use that language in an academic setting. Contact Lisa Sansoucy for more information.
