If privately owned vehicles are being used for University Business taking place off of Cornell's campus, those vehicles must be insured, and drivers must understand that they are using their vehicles on a completely voluntary basis. Furthermore, all participants who choose to ride in a private automobile (this is strongly discouraged) should understand and acknowledge, in writing as part of the liability release form, that they do so of their own free will. The use of students as drivers should be reviewed with Risk Management on an exception basis.
Damage to personal vehicles is not reimbursable by the University.
Note: Consult with your insurance agent to determine appropriate coverage. The traveler’s vehicle insurance is the primary insurance coverage when using a personal vehicle for university business.
If an accident occurs with a personal vehicle while on University Business, contact the Police and your insurance company immediately. Contact the Office of Risk Management and Insurance as soon as possible.
Please refer to the University Travel – Policy 3.2 regarding reimbursement for personal vehicle use.
Reach out to the Office of Risk Management and Insurance if you have additional questions about vehicle policy.
